Butterfly Lace Brooch

Photo 1 & 2: Leja

Lacemaking is one of the oldest tradition in Slovenia and I wanted to bring a piece of it to you. Idrija (pronounced: ídriya- town in northwestern Slovenia) is known for making the most extraordinary lace pieces. When someone speaks of lace, I immediately think of Idrija lace. That's how it's actually called, by the town's name. In 17th century this craftwork became another way of making earnings that was adopted by young and old women in middle class. Lacemaking became very popular and famous lace crafts were sold throughout Europe and USA. In the late 19th century the town even opened its own lacemaking school. There was huge drop in sales after World War I and today lacemaking is focused on tourism. You can visit Idrija Lace Festival which is carried out every summer in Idrija.
